Skyblock crates, keys and what is actually inside
A crate is a chest opened with a matching key, and it is how most skyblock servers deliver rewards. Tiers follow the same shape everywhere: a common everyday crate, two or three mid tiers, and a rare one holding the things people actually want.
Where keys come from
- Voting. Usually one key per vote site per day. Free, daily, and the reason skyblock servers care about vote sites.
- Playtime and dailies. A key every so often for being online, or a daily login chain. The healthiest source.
- Keyalls. Staff granting a key to everyone online at once. Worth being logged in for.
- In-game money. A key shop, which doubles as the late-game money sink.
- The store. Real money. Fine in itself; the question is whether the same key exists via the four routes above.
Judging a crate in two minutes
Look for a published drop table with percentages. A server that shows the odds has thought about them; a hidden table with a "mystery" top prize is a slot machine with extra steps.
Then ask the only question that matters: is the top prize obtainable anywhere else? A crate that is the sole route to a spawner tier or a multiplier makes keys mandatory and the server pay-to-win in the way people mean it. A crate that is a faster route to something also earnable makes keys optional. That single distinction settles most of the argument.
Saving versus opening
If there is no pity counter, open keys as they arrive: each open is independent and there is no such thing as being "due". If there is a pity counter, saving toward a guaranteed rare can be correct. Ask which the server runs, because it changes the maths entirely.
Before a reset
Open everything. Unspent keys are usually worthless the moment a season ends, and a saved stack of them is one of the most common avoidable losses on skyblock.
Our number one at play.talonmc.net runs daily keyalls and giveaways, so the
free-key routes above are the main ones there rather than an afterthought.
